Valley of Flowers was brought into light in 1931 by Frank S Smythe, Eric Shipton and R.L. Holdsworth (British mountaineers), during their return from Kamet.Valley of Flowers is famous for its meadows of alpine flowers, outstanding natural beauty, richly diverse wildlife and variety of flora. It was declared a national park in 1982 and was included in the list of World Heritage Sites by UNESCO in 2005. Valley of Flowers and Nanda Devi National Park, together constitute the Nanda Devi Biosphere Reserve.

This richly diverse area is home to rare and endangered animals, including the Asiatic black bear, snow leopard, brown bear and blue sheep. You can also find a wide variety of birds here, like Himalayan golden eagle, snow patridge, Himalayan snow cock, Himalayan monal, snow pigeon and sparrow. Numerous species of butterflies and insects too can be found here. The sight of a whole valley covered with flowers of every hue and colour does indeed give it magical quality. More than 650 species of flowers including Brahmakamal, Blue poppy and Cobra Lily can be found in the park.

More than a mere national park, valley of flower is a prominent trek too, and that is why a varied of travel lovers can head to this spot. In comparison to other popular treks situated at the same heights, valley of flowers requires lesser energy. The trek starts from Govindghat. In Ghangaria, the trek gets deviated with one route approaching towards Gurudwara Hemkunt Sahib and another route going towards the valley of flowers.

This trek is lined with perfumed wild flowers, wild rose bushes and wild strawberries. The landscape of this mesmerizing land is so breathtaking that you would go into trance the moment you reach there. The valley is 10km long and 2km wide. It is the catchment area of the Pushpawati river, which runs through the centre of the valley into the Bhyundar Ganga downstream of Ghangaria. On the way to valley of flowers, you will get to see several cascading waterfalls, a glance of which will soak all your exhaustion. The avid nature lovers might find the presence of this gigantic and rugged mountain peak complementing the utter soft vistas of the valley of flowers.
